Winter Kick Off Recap!

This past Tuesday, February 4, The Career Center held its annual Kick Off event in the student center atrium. I am happy to report that our tables where constantly crowded with students looking to talk with The Career Center staff or make an appointment! We began holding the Kick Off events last year and each one has been a great success so far.  The purpose of the Kick Off events is to bring The Career Center to you, our students! Whether it be to ask a career related question, get a resume critique, or make an appointment, our goal is to get to know you and let you get to know us!

And of course, no winter Kick Off would be complete without our snowman, free Starbucks coffee and cookies.

We look forward to seeing all of you at one (or hopefully more!) of our upcoming events for the spring semester!

My First Job: long hot days flipping burgers!

This year I celebrate 14 years in the human resources profession, which is an accomplishment as I fell in to it completely by accident or was it fate? As this anniversary fast approaches, I have been thinking about how I got here as well as what and who has helped me along the way. One factor that helped me was my first job: long hot days flipping burgers during a college summer vacation.

At the time, I hated working in the kitchen and front of house of a fast food restaurant in my home town in England during a college summer vacation. I wanted nothing more than to enjoy those long summer days in the sunshine with friends instead of flipping burgers, cleaning tables and waiting on the restaurants’ guests. I only saw one upside: that summer job allowed me to save money to spend my third year of college in Spain and France where I was able to visit parts of each country as well as study, which I probably would not have been able to do otherwise.

Little did I know that there was more than one upside! Two years’ later, I applied for my first “real” job in the UK Department of Defense that was setting up a new human resources team in the city where I was  studying. I had never thought of working in HR so was surprised when they offered me a position. Why? Simply because that first summer job enabled me to gain new skills: team work, dealing with difficult situations, communication, working under pressure, providing great customer service…all key for a career in human resources.

So, what do I take away from my first professional experience 16 years’ later that I want to share with you? Every professional experience no matter how good or bad provides us with valuable skills and experiences that we can use in later life. Spend some time thinking about the summer, part-time or voluntary work that you have done so far…what skills, experiences or attributes will you be able to “sell” to a potential employer upon graduation?

How's Your Interview Style?

Many of you will be venturing on your first “real” interview over the next few months whether it is for an internship or for a job after graduation.  Interviewing is tough, no matter who it is with!  Preparation is crucial and even the most confident of us can struggle.

We have blogged many times before about our practice “mock” interview services, but did you know that we also have interview tips in our Career Planning Handbook, on You Tube (search Hofstra Career Center) and through Candid Career (click on their logo on our homepage)?

I also saw this article today and thought I would share it with you.  It is very helpful - click here to check it out!

6 Tips for Proper Social Media Etiquette

In my last blog post, I talked about the importance of "googleing" yourself to make sure your online presence is professional. Given that your online presence is so important and can have both positive and negatives effects on your job search, the article "6 Tips for Proper Social Media Etiquette in the New Year" serves as a great continuation of this topic. It is important to note that going forward, you should be aware of these 6 tips and practice them whenever you post something online. This mindset not only applies when your are in the process of looking for a job, but also when you have secured a position.

Culture Shock

As we begin the new semester, many of you are beginning your spring internship.  A common question students ask during their internship interviews is “what is the company culture?”  How many of us really know what that means or what we are looking for?  My guess is not many.  However, how we “jive” with an organization’s culture is very important to our career success and happiness.  Your internship is a great time to start to understand this concept and get a feel for what you are looking for.

Internships.com published a helpful article on “Getting a read on corporate culture.”  Check out the article for some clarification on what company culture really means and how to understand it.

Best wishes for a great spring semester!
