There's No Place Like Home for the Holidays!

YES! You made it to Fall Break! No matter what holiday you celebrate, there’s nothing quite like being able to go home, unwind from the craziness of the Fall Semester, and spend time with your family. Of course, this comes with the one family tradition that every college student dreads; the seemingly never-ending string of:

“So, what’s your major?”
“What are you going to do with it?”
“Are you looking for a job yet?”

Handling these questions, especially when you aren’t sure of the answers, can make what’s supposed to be a relaxing time off from responsibilities stressful! So, your friends at The Career Center have put together a list of things for you to think about to help you combat nosy Aunt Nelly!

If you don’t have a major yet: Own it! Point out that you’re taking this time to explore courses that really interest you. Even if you haven’t come closer to deciding what you DO want to major in, you may have already figured out a few subjects that you DON’T—which is sometimes even more helpful!

Explaining the career paths for your major: Sometimes this is pretty cut-and-dry, especially for students enrolled in trajectory programs like pre-law or pre-med. However, certain majors have many career options. Sites like CandidCareer offer valuable insight on the many different career paths one can pursue, and even Googling “What can I do with [insert major here]” can be incredibly helpful!

Your job search (or potential lack thereof): Even if you haven’t started looking for positions to which you can apply yet, it’s never too early to start networking! Use the Alumni Student Konnection to A.S.K. Hofstra alumni from a variety of fields questions about their career path! To access A.S.K., log in to the Hofstra Portal and click on “Hofstra Online,” then click on “A.S.K.” To keep in touch with everyone in your network, make sure your LinkedIn profile is professional and up-to-date (or create a profile if you don’t have one!).

Whatever you do, don’t sweat it! Your family is there to support you no matter what step of the Path you might be on, and your Career Center family is here to help you when you get back to campus!

Have a very happy and healthy holiday!

I Spent a Month in Tuscany Digging up Etruscan Tombs...

Experiential learning comes in all shapes and sizes.  I recently spoke with Michael, a Hofstra anthropology major, about his fascinating fieldwork abroad this past summer.  He was able to get valuable career experience while going abroad and receiving class credit.  Depending on what you major in or want to gain, you can benefit from an internship, volunteering, or even fieldwork home or abroad.  Below is Michael’s experience in his own words.
-       Deanna Rodin, Associate Director

Being a part of an Archaeodig program this past summer has been one of the best experiences in my life. I spent a month in Tuscany digging up Etruscan tombs. Myself and eight other students dug under the hot sun for eight hours Monday through Friday. We learned how to properly uncover bones, pottery pieces, and every once in a while, coins and unharmed pots! During the day, we would get one on one instruction from the directors of the program about what it is we are doing and how we can better understand the stratification of the dirt and the importance of clarity and detail.  Almost every day after digging, we would all go the Gulf of Baratti and go for a swim!

During the weekends, all of the students went touring! We went to Firenze, Rome, and Piombino, a nearby city next to where we were staying. Not only did we get hands on experience in the field five days a week, we also were able to immerse ourselves in the Italian culture during our free times. Being apart of the Archaeodig field team allowed me to build life long relationships and connections for the future. I recommend it to any undergrad or graduate student who is interested in doing fieldwork in one of the most gorgeous places on the planet. The faculty was so nice that they even invited me to come back! They truly care about their American students and welcomed us into their project with open arms.

Studying abroad was something that I always wanted to partake in during my undergraduate career. I am so happy that I was able to experience a study abroad program that fit my major requirements, as well as bring me insight to the Italian culture and friends across the country. Hofstra was very helpful in communicating with me and cooperative with my transfer credits. The study abroad office helped me handle the paper work so that my experience was the best one ever. Even though I was not able to find a study abroad program through Hofstra, I was able to research Hofstra's diverse programs to get an idea of what I was looking for and to get an idea of the experience and quality of education I could benefit from when studying abroad.

Baby, I Was Born This Way

Yesterday marked the culmination of this semester’s PRIDE A-La-Carte series.  I was so impressed with all of the students’ reflections on the program and what they have learned over the semester.  They spoke a lot about self-growth, service to others, and leadership.  My colleague Lorraine and I were honored to be the last presenters to an eager group of students earning their certificate of leadership.  We presented on none other than the illustrious Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) personality assessment.

What does knowing your personality type have to do with the P.R.I.D.E. Principles and leadership, you might ask?   Self-knowledge is power, and with great power comes great responsibility.  The more you know about yourself, the more effectively you can communicate and work with others.  You can see things from a well-rounded perspective, react more soundly and make productive decisions.  Besides, learning about yourself is always fun and eye opening!

Without going into depth about what the MBTI is and what personality preferences mean, the MBTI teaches you about the natural inborn way you prefer to see and do things.  There are no right or wrong, better or worse preferences.  The preferences you are born with are the ones you will always have, so how can your way of seeing and doing things be wrong?  But, others have different preferred ways of seeing and doing things, and they were born that way, so how can they be wrong?  Therein lies the point:  it’s about knowing your strengths, being open-minded with others, and knowing when and how to compromise.  Good leaders, no, great leaders, know how to listen and take in different perspectives before reaching decisions; everyone has something to offer.  The MBTI teaches you how to have patience and respect for others.  It is extremely empowering!

So, what does the MBTI have to do with the P.R.I.D.E. Principles?  Everything.  If you want to schedule an MBTI presentation for your campus group or if you want to take the assessment individually, call our office to schedule an appointment.

Conversation Starters for Networking Events

You have heard it before and you will hear it again. Networking is so important. In today's world, many people are getting jobs and internships through networking and building relationships. That being said, networking is a skill. Like any skill, it needs to be learned and then refined. The more you apply it, the more comfortable and confident you become with it. Many people are intimidated by the idea of networking. I know at one point in time, I certainly was. I do promise, however, that the more you put yourself out there and the more events you attend, the easier and more natural it will be for you.

To help boost your confidence and get you started, I suggest reading this article from CareerRealism.com which provides 18 easy conversation starters that you can use at networking events. The article provides great, realistic advice on how to spark up a conversation and how to keep it going!

Still struggling with networking? Make an appointment with a career counselor! We are here to help you with ALL aspects of your career development including networking strategies!
