#Followyourhero to #Becomeahero

Are you on Twitter?  If you are, I hope you attended last night’s “Hashtag to Hired” event in the Student Center!  And if you’re not on Twitter yet, you may be missing out on making new connections that could get you hired!

Last night, Hofstra alumna and founder of NY Creative Interns, Emily Miethner, gave great tips and tricks on using Twitter and other social media sites to help students build their online image and create new connections.   One of her most important pieces of advice is to “follow your heroes”.  What she means by this is to find those people who are doing your dream job (not Kim Kardashian or Lady Gaga - though I’m sure their tweets are interesting!) and to follow them on Twitter and to check out their profiles on LinkedIn.  It may seem like no big deal to follow your hero on Twitter, but it gives you a way to connect with them and to stand out from the crowd.  It also gives you a chance to find out what they are doing in their daily lives that make them so successful and what’s going on in your specific industry.  And don’t be afraid to get into a Twitter conversation with your hero – these are the kind of connections that can lead to internship and job opportunities!

Take a look at what your heroes have done in the past and what they’re doing now that makes them successful and follow suit. Think about what you can do today to help you become someone else’s hero in the future!
