As I sit here trying to think of something to write, I can’t
help but hear a buzz. And no, it is not
that annoying fly that keeps coming around my office. It is the buzz of campus coming back to
life. The buzz of a new semester. The buzz of a new academic year filled with
promise and energy. In Student Affairs,
we have been busy all summer planning for the fall, our incoming new students,
the Presidential Debate, and a semester filled with lots of career
programming. This past week, students
have been booking more appointments at The Career Center with the intention of
planning for their internships, and December graduations, and considering a
change in majors after their summer experiences. This is exciting to career counselors! This is what makes our jobs fun and
rewarding. I love the students’ energy
and I love that they are thinking ahead, trying to start their semester on the
proverbial “right foot.”
So, I pose this question to you, what are you going to do start
this semester on the right foot? I would love to see your comments. To get you started here are some ideas:
- Visit The Career Center and sign up on hofstra.edu/career to watch our career planning webshop
- Plan for an internship or part time job – sooner than later
- Spend time studying this semester to build up your GPA
- Join a club and volunteer
- Start a Linkedin profile
- Attend at least one professional networking event on campus with employers and/or alumni
- Go to at least one job fair this semester (we are hosting 5!)
- Look into our on-campus interview program, PrideRecruiting at the start of the semester – sign ups start early for mandatory orientations!
- Get involved with the Debate 2012 activities
- Spend time thinking about your future – don’t avoid it, it’s going to be here sooner than you think
