Risks & Rewards: Leadership Edition

Being a leader can be tough. As a leader you are constantly challenged to be a role model, make tough decisions, and take responsibility for outcomes. You may already be experiencing this as the captain of your athletic team, e-board member of your campus club, or supervisor at your part-time job.

I came across this interview with Steven Snyder, author and former CEO. Mr. Snyder discusses the struggles and challenges of being a leader. He touches on the disappointments that can occur, but also the tremendous learning opportunities that are available to those in leadership positions.

I hope you can apply what you read here to your own leadership experiences! If you would like assistance with taking those experiences and illustrating them on your resume, please visit The Career Center  You can come during our Quick Question hours, Monday-Friday from 10:00-11:00 or 2:00-4:00, or you can set up an appointment by stopping into our office, calling 463-6060, or by logging in to PrideCMS from your own computer.

You Can Find Family Just About Anywhere...

It could be the stress from finals, but it's at this time of the semester that you know you have to turn to your support systems, wherever you may find it. I'm feeling very fortunate to have had found a mini-family and source of support, right here at the Career Center! Being brand new to the Hofstra community and being this year's graduate assistant, I've been exposed to a group of supportive and knowledgeable people that made work not feel like work, and they truly have made me feel welcome at Hofstra.

The Career Center Family (Missing MaryBeth!)

I find it's important to realize that when stress levels are high because of that big presentation or internship/job deadlines are looming, that you take a moment to ground yourself and turn to your support system to get you back to a working state.

Stop and think who make up your support system. Friends? Family? Co-workers? Teachers? I'm sure there are multiple groups and people you can turn to. And similarly to how pleasantly surprised I was to find a family here at the Career Center, we welcome you all with open arms to join our family! Give us a call at (516) 463-6060 or go online to hofstra.edu/career to make an appointment and let us support you when you need it!

How to Prepare for a Career Center Appointment

A Career Center appointment is a great way to cover a variety of career preparation topics you need to know about: resumes, cover letters, how to find your ideal job/internship, figuring out which career you want to pursue, practice interviews, career resources, how to apply to positions, your thoughts on your career development, etc. However, you can save a lot of time and make the most out of your appointment by preparing for it.

Here, I quickly cover 5 things that you should try to bring to your Career Center Appointment, especially if it’s your first one ever:

Resume
Most of the information you will cover in your appointment will revolve around your resume. You can save time by having it already printed or on your tablet/laptop so that the career counselor can see your experience and also go over any additions or edits you can make to your resume.

Cover Letter
The reason you should bring your cover letter is similar to that of bringing your resume. Most job/internship applications require a cover letter. By reviewing yours with the career counselor, you can go over if you are on the right track as far as how you are writing the cover letter and if it relates to the positions you are applying to.

Bring a recent/most-edited version of your resume and cover letter
To save even more time, check out our Career Planning Handbook to get tips on how to do your resume and cover letter, so that you can make sure that you have the bases covered.

2 examples of jobs/internships you want to apply to
You can have the most well written resume and cover letter, but if they don’t relate at all to the positions you are applying to, they are not going to get you the job. By bringing some job/internship postings you are interested in (whether printed or on your tablet/laptop) you and the career counselor can see if your resume and cover letter are well edited AND if they match the positions you are interested in.

Pen and paper to take notes
You will get a lot of valuable information during your appointment; don’t forget to take notes on the helpful things you learn.

There’s the saying “Success is where preparation and opportunity meet.” Make sure you do the preparation, and we at the Career Center will help you find the opportunities that fit you.
