Climbing the Corporate Ladder

Want to be the CEO of an international company like Target?   Or maybe electronics is your thing and being the CEO of Best Buy would be your dream job. Well, let me give you the inside scoop on how Robert Ulrich, CEO of Target Corporation from 1994-2008 and Brad Anderson, CEO of Best Buy, got their starts. You might want to right this down so go get a pen.  Are you ready?  Here it is…they worked in retail.

Robert Ulrich started as a Cart Attendant, then held various positions including Sales Manager, Buyer, Group Manager and Vice President for Dayton Hudson department Store Group (now Target.)

As for Brad Anderson, he attained a Bachelor’s degree in sociology and went to work as a salesperson for a music store.  He rose up through the ranks, eventually becoming Vice President, Executive Vice President, President and COO and, later, CEO of Best Buy.

Retail companies are famous from promoting from within.  In fact, when they hire college grads it is with the intent to train them so that they can, in fact, climb the corporate ladder.  They look for applicants who enjoy working with people, have enthusiasm and motivation and can think on their feet.

Two giants in the retail industry will be visiting The Career Center to speak with students about managerial training programs. Target will be holding an information session on Tuesday, April 29 from 5:30-7:00 and Macy’s will be holding “Meet & Greet” sessions on Tuesday, May 6 from 10:00-12:00 and 2:00-4:00 (stop in anytime during the Macy’s open hours.)

Hope to see you there!

Darlene Johnson,
Senior Associate Director
