As the semester dwindles down...

...How are you going to divide your time this Winter break?

As a current student, I can relate to the stress of finals and the desire to have all assignments be completed and handed in with a nice, neat bow. And when that is all said and done, everyone deserves a break! But while Winter break is among us and you divide your time between seeing friends and family, eating food for the Holidays, and catching up on all your sleep, we hope that you'll spend some time getting ahead on your job and internship search!

The Career Hub is a great resource for Hofstra students and alumni to utilize to explore various industries, receive tips on the career process, and to search for jobs, volunteer opportunities, and internships! So while you're sipping on hot cocoa, we hope you'll spend some time searching, especially if you're looking to obtain a position for Spring or Summer!

And as always, The Career Center is here to support you! We will be closed starting December 24th and will resume normal hours January 4th. Don't forget to give us a call at (516) 463-6060 to schedule an appointment!

What Did You Do Over The Summer?

Well, it’s officially Fall! There is a slight chill in the air and you can get just about anything pumpkin-flavored that you could possibly want. But let’s not forget so quickly about this past summer! How did you spend your time off? Did you travel extensively? Were you working? Volunteering? Learning a new computer skill? Any of these things can now be put on your resume.

Never underestimate the value of any part-time job. Say, for example, you are a Public Relations major and you were a lifeguard one day a week over the summer. You may think that putting this position on your resume doesn’t make sense because it’s not related to your major and because it was only one day a week. However, there is no requirement on the number of hours that you need to do a job in order to put it on your resume. Also, while the position itself may not be related to your career goal, the transferable skills learned and used at that job would be relevant to any position. As a lifeguard you have a serious amount of responsibility and must work under pressure.  You also must pay attention to what is going on around you and respond when needed. Maybe you also trained new lifeguards, supervised others, or were given responsibility to open and close the pool area. All of those job duties would fit in quite nicely on a resume!

The Career Center is here to help you take those summer experiences and put them on a resume or practice talking about them in an interview. Make an appointment with us before those summer memories fade away like your tan lines.

Director of External Relations

Opportunities with the Center for Civic Engagement

We in the Career Center are interested in helping you find interesting opportunities. Sometimes those experiences are off campus, and sometimes they can be found right here at Hofstra! I want to highlight a great place for you to explore -- the Center for Civic Engagement.

The CCE at Hofstra wants you to make a positive difference in the world.  Through on-campus events, off-campus community partnerships, and curricular offerings, CCE is raising high school graduation rates, creating affordable housing for families, improving the health of area children, reducing bullying, increasing food security, deepening grassroots democracy, protecting civil rights, labor rights, and immigrant rights, and much, much more. To learn more, visit their website at www.hofstra.edu/cce.

Through the CCE you can volunteer, take an internship for academic credit, or become a paid fellow! All Hofstra students (both undergraduate and graduate) are eligible. To get involved, attend one of their weekly student meetings that take place every Monday from 5-6pm in Room 206 of Davison Hall, or contact either their Graduate Assistant for Civic Literacy, Brianna Borresen, (bborre4@pride.hofstra.edu) or their Graduate Assistant for Community Partnerships, Andrew Manning (amanni8@pride.hofstra.edu).

The experiences you could gain with CCE could help transform the community and your own professional and personal growth. Check them out!
