Transferable Skills

The dictionary defines the word transfer as:

Transfer (v.): to convey from one person, place or situation to another.

It also defines the word skill as:

Skill (n.): the ability, coming from one's knowledge, practice, etc., to do something well.

In Career Development, the words in the phrase "transferable skills" go hand in hand. What skills have you learned being a Softball Team Captain that you can bring to an advertising agency? What are some skills you bring to the "workforce" table from your many experiences?  Communication, Planning, Delegating, Problem solving, and Teamwork are just a few examples.

Think of one think you learned at your first part-time job and how you apply it to where you work now... and what have you learned in your current position that you know you will be able to use in the future? You never know what will end up being a really valuable experience!

How to Network with Alumni

You might have heard over and over that networking is important when trying to find a job or internship or to get career advice. But if you’re like most people, you probably have no idea where to start or how to start a conversation.

What if I told you that there was a huge population of people that you are connected with that could provide you with some networking opportunities? Yes, there is an answer: alumni. There are tons of Hofstra alumni in various industries that are available for networking and informational interviews.

Here are 2 ways to do this:
  1.  Alumni Student Konnection – This free service provided to Hofstra students allows you to contact alumni and ask career-related questions. For more information, you contact The Career Center at 516-463-6060.
  2. Linkedin.com/alumni – At LinkedIn, you can search for alumni and narrow down your search results by information such as major, job title, and location. You can also see if you and the alum know people in common.

If you want to get more detailed advice on how to network with alumni, join us at The Career Center for our How to Network with Alumni Workshop: next Wednesday, March 5, from 11:30 to 12:30! You will also get the chance to hear from a Hofstra student who was able to successfully network with an alum.

I will leave you with some Networking Tips...
  1. When first contacting the alumni, mention something you and the alum have in common, not just that you both went to Hofstra. (examples: having the same undergraduate major, having work experience at the same company, similar interests, etc.). If you and the alum know someone in common, see if that person can make the introduction.
  2. Do not ask for a job right away. Most of the alums you contact will not have the power to give or offer you a job. And anyway you want to establish a connection and find out information about the career/company the alum works in first and build rapport and trust. That way you can see what qualifications and characteristics the company values and what the people in charge of hiring look for in their candidates.
  3. After you have spent some time building a connection with your networking contact, then you may hear about job opportunities from that contact or start to inquire about ones that become available and match your qualifications.
  4. Provide value to your networking contacts and keep the connection. Building rapport with a networking contact should not be just about you asking for help. Utilize your connection by finding about the industry the contact is connected to and offer to help when needed. You can also share information and articles that you think might be helpful to this person. A good way to keep the connection is to have a LinkedIn profile and connect with your networking contacts on LinkedIn.
  5. Don’t bring your resume to networking events. That’s what business cards are for. For more information on how to design your own business card, make an appointment with a career counselor at The Career Center.

We hope to see you on the 5th! Good luck, and happy networking!

It's All About Marketing: Sell Yourself to Employers!

I always tell the students that come into my office that their resume is one of the best resources they have in marketing themselves to employers. Your resume should give a comprehensive picture not only of what you have done, but also how you fulfilled the duties of the postition and what things you got out of the experience (such as skills, knowledge, and results). One of the ways I advise students to do this is by using the S.T.A.R. method, where you talk about your experiences in the context of a Situation you encountered, a Task you had to accomplish, the Actions you took to get the job done, and the Result you got out of it!

We have a great tip sheet on the S.T.A.R. method on our website (check it out by clicking here!) but there are always more steps you can take to make sure your business-of-one is completely on the market. Careerealism is putting on a great Webinar on Wednedsay, March 5th at 1pm to talk about these tactics and give you the best resources available to market yourself... and the best part is that it's free!

I'll be watching on the 5th... will you?
See what it's about and register by clicking here, and then show those employers what you've got!

Looking for a Rewarding Career? Hear us out!

Hi Hofstra Students!

My name is Emily, and I would like to inform you about the Department of Speech-Language Hearing Science’s upcoming Career Day on February 26th. Our very own Professor, Dr. Milstein, is hosting this wonderful event in order to invite students who are undecided or unhappy with their major to explore the numerous career opportunities as a Speech-Language Pathologist or Audiologist that can develop from being a Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences major. This event gives you the opportunities to not only ask questions, but also to learn about our undergraduate student organization, NSSLHA. This club allows you to not only to further explore the major but also to make lifelong friends.

When I first came to Hofstra, I was completely lost. I had no idea what I wanted to do, or how to even approach finding a major. Once I was advised to visit the Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences Department, I instantly fell in love. The staff who comprises the department are all wonderful individuals who truly care about your well being, and actually take the time out to help advise and encourage you, not only within the major but with your academic career. My favorite aspect of the major is how you can work with children one on one or in a small group setting, allowing you to create a special bond. In addition, you have the opportunity to become an advocate to increase a person’s quality of life.

In addition, your fellow classmates not only support you in your studies, but also give great advice and truly become your best friends. I realized this when I joined NSSLHA. NSSHLA allows you to socialize with your peers outside of the classroom. It is a priceless opportunity since everyone is having similar academic stresses. I do not know where I would be today without these priceless companions. Also, the executive board along with me dedicates our time to organize events that allow you to become even more involved in the major and the community that surrounds it.

I hope to see anyone who is interested in becoming a Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences Major on Wednesday, February 26, in Davison Hall Room 101, during Common Hour (11:15am – 12:45pm)!

See you soon,

Emily R.
