Look your Best in your Next Interview!

You always hear that for an interview, you should dress for success--but what does that really mean? Here are some tid-bits about personal grooming to keep in mind as you prepare for your next mock or real interview:

1. Do not wear too much fragrance. If you have been told in the past, "I smell you when you leave the room," YES that is too much.
2. Brush your teeth (and make sure you check for bagel seeds in-between!) 
3. Wear clothes that fit. If they are too tight, you will look uncomfortable and feel uncomfortable as well.
4. Wear comfortable shoes; for ladies, make sure your heel height is appropriate.
5. Ladies, keep a shorter nail length and wear neutral nail polish.
6. Minimal jewelry overall; for the men, NO earrings.
7. Hair should be neat and clean (keep in mind, there are MANY old school interviewers, know the work culture of the company!)
8. Makeup – less is best!
9. For clothing, men should wear a dark suit and ladies may want to consider wearing stockings with your skirt suit (better to safe than sorry!)
10. No matter your look, bring your BEST you.

Taking a Weakness and Making it Into a Strength!

I don't consider myself the creative type. I find that I struggle with coming up with new, innovative ideas sometimes. I have artistic abilities, but that doesn't always necessarily lead to creativity. I find my strengths to lie in support and implementation, and not so much on the "start-from-nothing-and-get-creative-type".

Do I consider that a weakness of mine? Yes.
Is that something I have made strides to work on? Definitely!

Recently, I had the opportunity to work on my creative skills and make something my own. Thanks to Deanna Rodin (the Career Center Associate Director) I was able to take over our recent #HUInternSelfie Challenge and make it my very own. I worked with Deanna and brainstormed a ton of ideas (from very practical to wild and outrageous--think riding an elephant) to use throughout the entire process. This included ways to advertise and get the challenge out there, how to logistically manage the event, which platform was optimal to host the challenge, what challenges would students participate each week, what can we use for the future, and what would be some of the post-event activities with our winner. Although I worked within certain guidelines, it really was a great opportunity to make an event completely my own and have fun with it! I also learned a lot along the way about the process of putting on event and how things work on the Hofstra campus. In the end, I felt we had a great participation (of 10 diverse student interns) and I'm truly proud of the end product (and excited for our winner of the $250 Nordstrom Gift Card!).

Overall, I view weaknesses as future strengths that haven't been worked on yet. The steps I took to work on this particular weakness were:

• Admit to myself and to another person that this is a quality I want to work on. This made me accountable to actually take the steps towards improvement.
• Find an opportunity to work said-quality, big or small. This will give you the freedom and space to work on that skill--remember, practice does make perfect!
• Have fun with it! Not succeeding doesn't always mean failure, this could be one of your first attempts at working on this quality. Give yourself the space to have fun and you'll continue progressing in the future.

With the support of the Career Center staff, I felt encouraged to continue moving forward with my creativity and come up with a fun event, and I hope participants enjoyed it too! If you have a weakness you want to work on, the Career Center is here to support you make it into a strength! Maybe communication isn't your forte and you have a big interview coming up--we'll practice with a mock interview to transform it into a strength. Maybe you're writing skill isn't where you want it to be and you're struggling with a cover letter--the Career Center is here to help you through that process too! All you have to do is reach out and we'll be here!

Etiquette Dinner

Thursday, March 19, 2015, 6PM, University Club

Join us for a unique dining event with a three-course dinner and an interactive seminar facilitated by a certified etiquette trainer. Participants will learn how to properly conduct themselves on interviews and meetings in a formal dining atmosphere, and learn proper networking and conversation etiquette. There is a $10 fee, which includes the seminar and three-course meal. Space is limited; Fee/RSVP can be submitted to The Career Center to reserve your seat.

Interviewing Tips to Get Closer to Your Internship/Career

As the Holidays are getting closer, many students are starting to study for finals or possibly make more time to search and apply for internships. This Forbes article lists some great interview tips to become a more “persuasive interviewer.”

Some of my favorites are “Take an interest in both the company and person.” and “Always thank the interviewer following the Interview.”

Interviewing is a developed skill, rather than a natural talent. It takes lots of practice and preparation to be the best you can be.

Don’t wait until your actual interview to perfect your interviewing skills. You can make an appointment at The Career Center at Hofstra.edu/career or 516-463-6060 to schedule a mock interview with a career counselor. Also PrideCMS has the mock interview module in its Resources tab, which is perfect for preparing for virtual interviews. We are open and available for appointments during Winter break.

Keep On Keeping On...

Dear Students, 

You are in the home stretch of the semester. Do not give up! I know you are tired, and if you went home for Thanksgiving, you probably want to be back with the family you have missed and just check out of school. But I am cautioning you not to do that! You have worked hard all semester and the end is finally near. Soon, you will be home for the holiday and enjoying your family again with all the love, hugs, and good food they have to offer. Once you have gotten that all done and you find yourself wondering how to get your mind wrapped around the next semester, be sure to have on your radar, "What am I going to do for the summer?" Yes, summer is coming and whether you are a planner or not, we at the Career Center are here for you during your down time. This is a perfect opportunity for you to get your resume updated, meet with a Career Counselor in an appointment (via phone if necessary), and maybe practice with a mock interview. Career development is like a good home cooked meal: IT TAKES TIME and PREPARATION.

3 New Technology Resources from the Career Center

Here at the Career Center, we are constantly focused on improving and providing new resources and services.  This semester, we launched quite a large list of new services and platforms to help you along the path of your career.  In this post, I want to highlight three that you may have missed when we announced them at the beginning of the semester.

• You can now make appointments with our career counselors through our website.  So, whenever you’re sitting at home or in your residence hall thinking, “I need some help with my career planning,” all you need to do is click over to our site and get on our calendars at a time of your convenience.

• While there is no substitute for practicing interviews and get feedback from us in person, we have launched an online practice interview module as part of the Pride-CMS system.  Access Pride-CMS through the “my apps” section of the portal.  Once you’ve updated your profile, you can click on the “resources” tab within Pride-CMS and use your webcam to practice any of the 30+ interviews we have built for you, or you can build your own from over 1800 pre-recorded questions.

• GoinGlobal is another new resource available within Pride-CMS (again, through the “my apps” section of the portal).  GoinGlobal is rich with information on career-related and cultural information from nearly 50 countries and a wide-variety of US cities.  Use this system to find best information about travelling to and working in other countries.  It’s also very useful if you’re considering a move to another area in the US.
