The Traditional Meal for Career Success

I don’t know about you, but every year, a few days before Thanksgiving, my father asks me what I want to eat at our Thanksgiving meal. And more or less, my answer is, “we HAVE to have turkey, ham, green bean casserole, sweet potatoes…” and then the list goes on. I realized that in tradition and as the years go by, I have come up with a list that is the standard minimum of what has to be at the dinner table or else it won’t be our traditional Thanksgiving dinner.

Similarly, there is a standard minimum of what most job and internship opportunities need in order to apply and succeed:
  • Resume: Almost every position you apply to will require a resume. Employers want to know what background you have in the industry through your education, work experience, clubs and activities, etc. so make sure that you have an updated document with appropriate experiences on your resume.
  • Cover Letter: Most positions will require a cover letter, this is your opportunity to speak more about yourself and give some concrete examples in your past experiences that show why you are the best candidate for the job.
  • Interview: This is your opportunity to shine in front of a recruiter. They will ask you a variety of questions to see how you fit into the company or organization. Similarly, this is a chance for you to see if this company or organization is a fit for you!

Although these are just three examples we hear about often in the professional world, they are very crucial to the career process. Additionally, some other standards are knowledge about the industry, presenting your most professional self, thank you letters--the list goes on.

As always, you know that the Career Center is available if you have any questions about the career process, want a critique of your resume/cover letter, or would like to get some mock interview practice in. Stop by our Quick Questions or give us a call to make an appointment!

Cheers and Happy Thanksgiving!

Connecting the Dots Between Resources

Resumes. Cover letters. Interviews. All things needed to land that job or internship.

It can get overwhelming, especially when all those deadlines start looming over your head. Sometimes it’s a matter of “where do I start?” or “how do I improve what I have already?” There are definitely resources out there for you to utilize!

I’m here to connect you to three resources that you can take advantage of throughout the process of developing and perfecting resumes/cover letters and to gain some good interview tips and skills!

  1. Career Planning Handbook – At the Career Center, we’ve put together a book to help you with every step of the career process. There is detailed advice and specific examples of resumes/cover letters and the etiquette of interviews. It’s available online or you can stop by and pick up a hard copy for free!
  2. Vault.com – This is a resource we offer through PrideCMS where you can get advice on all things career related. They blog (just like I’m doing!) to give you good career advice and also post jobs/internships! However, the ‘”Resumes & More” tab offers you videos and tip sheets dealing with the interview and creating your resume/cover letter.
  3. Quick Question Hours – Everyday from 10-11AM and 2-4PM we offer a drop in service where, without an appointment, you can get your resume and cover letter looked at from either a career counselor or myself. This can be useful for anyone at any point of the process, whether you need help getting started or getting it finalized before you send it in!

Whether you choose to use one or all of the above is entirely your choice. But these resources can be advantageous throughout the entire process of developing your resume/cover letter and practicing for that interview! And as always, we are here over at the Career Center to offer support throughout that whole process! #PathOfPride

Changes at The Career Center!

As the summer comes to a close and the first day of classes quickly approaches, I wanted to fill you all in on some great changes that have taken place in The Career Center over the past few months. We are so excited to move forward with these new initiatives and look forward to continue to evolve to best serve you, our students! Check out the changes below.

Extended Quick Question Hours

We've added more Quick Question hours! Quick questions hours will now be Monday-Friday 10am-11am & 2pm-4pm. There is no appointment needed during these times, so come on in if you have a quick question for us!

Career Counseling Appointments

Career counseling appointments can now be made online! Simply go to hofstra.edu/career and click on "Make an Appointment" on the right hand side of the page.

Virtual Mock Interviews in Pride-CMS

You can now practice your interview skills whenever and where ever with our new virtual mock interview module! To try it out, log in to Pride-CMS (located under "my apps" in the portal) and click on the "mock interview" option on the left hand side of the page. Wait, there's more! Once you have completed your mock interview, you have the option to send it to the career counselor of your choice for a virtual critique!

Goin Global

Another new feature in Pride-CMS is GoinGlobal, which provides country guides and advice on careers abroad, international career applications, Visa and related requirements and much more. International students can use it to learn about U.S. Visas. The site also contains career guides on states and cities within the U.S.

If you have any questions about these new initiatives, feel free to call the office at (516) 463-6060. We look forward to seeing all of you on campus next week and wish you luck in the upcoming academic year!

Does Your Resume Need Some Spring Cleaning?

YES! It's Spring Break, Hofstra! I hope you're enjoying some well-deserved relaxation time.

It seemed like it would never come after the winter weather we've had... but the first day of Spring is tomorrow! Spring is a great time to clean up from the clutter and dreariness of the "winter blues," and your resume is no exception!

Last year, Careerealism posted this great article about how to spruce up your resume as you dive into a new season of your career search, and I think it's really helpful! Make sure that if you started a new internship or involvement experience this semester, or are taking a new class that's relevant to the type of job you're looking for, you add it to your resume! Don't undersell yourself or your wonderful experiences!

Want us to take a look at what you've added once you're done? We're here to help, even during break!
Come into our Quick Question hours from 2pm-4pm Monday - Thursday and 11am-1pm Friday, or call our office at 516-463-6060 to schedule an appointment with one of our counselors!

Happy Spring Cleaning! I hope to see you soon!
