Service Networking for Math and Economics Majors

Students are invited to Service Networking, an afternoon of community service and networking with professionals and alumni. The program begins at The Career Center where students and professionals/alumni will be transported to Friends of Hempstead Plains . At the site, an informal pizza lunch will take place where students can engage in a healthy dialogue with professionals in the field and make connections. After lunch, students and professionals will work together to cut shrubs, weed, plant seeds, and participate in general spring clean up. Afterwards, The Career Center will provide transportation from the community service site back to the Career Center.

Pride Shadowing Program

The PRIDE Shadowing Program is an opportunity for students to explore possible career fields and gain exposure to the professional work environment. Participants will visit a host organization for one day and learn first hand how classroom learning can be linked to career choices and further educational goals. Shadowing can help students obtain knowledge that comes only from being in the job setting.

Success Academy Charter Schools Long Island College Recruitment Night

Hiring Teachers, Leaders, and Operations Roles! Come mingle with Success Academy recruiters and learn about teaching and school leadership opportunities. All majors are welcome—you don’t have to be an education major to take advantage of this opportunity! Light food will be served. Snag that next dream internship, graduate assistantship, or employment opportunity!

With Summer fast approaching, various interviews are being conducted for internships, graduate assistantships, and employment opportunities. No one can deny how nerve-racking an interview can be, but we hope these 6 tips will help you land that dream experience!

1. Do your research on the company.

An employer does not want to hire someone who has no knowledge of their company. Go on their website, and read up not only on your department, but others as well. Especially note the company’s mission statement. If possible, speak to someone who is currently working there. While in the interview, you should try to incorporate the organization’s values in your answers.

2. Prepare questions you are likely to be asked.

A question that is almost a guarantee is the classic “Tell me about yourself”. Sounds easy, right? However, this question is deceptively hard to answer because it is so vague. The key to answering this question is showing you will fit in their company, bring about their desired goals, and elevate it with your skill set. To do so you need to highlight your successes, past involvements, and strengths.

3. Have questions for the interviewer.

This tip ties into your research. Never ask the employer a question that is easily answered on their website. A good question to always ask is “What is your favorite aspect of working here?” Afterwards, be sure to say “Thank you!” for the interview. Everyone loves to be appreciated, and they did choose you.

4. Choose what you wear with care.

The importance of this tip cannot be overstated. Often, employers know within the first ten minutes of an interview whether they are going to hire someone. This is because first impressions matter. One way to make an excellent first impression is by choosing an outfit that is appropriate, modest, and not too flashy. They say that the best color to wear is navy blue because it portrays that you are calm and to be trusted.

5. Remember your body language

Be sure to have a good, firm handshake, sit up straight, and have your shoulders back. Try to be confident, but not cocky. In addition, have consistent eye contact and smile. This will all help improve your first impression.

6. Sign up at the Career Center for a mock interview!

Afterwards, continue to practice with a friend or family member. The more prepared you are, the better you will come across in the interview.

Tips to Prepare for

The 2017 Spring Career Fair

· Bring lots of copies of your resume! Stop by the Career Center to have your resume reviewed during Quick Question Hours: Weekdays 10:00-11:00 a.m. & 2:00-4:00 p.m.!

· Come prepared. First, register on Handshake, then review the list of employers attending and their job opportunities. As you review employers, you can add them to your “favorite” list for later review. If you spend a little time getting background information on an organization, you then can ask very focused and specific questions. This impresses company representatives because it shows that you are genuinely interested in working for them. With over 180 employers to choose from, you’re bound to find that valuable internship opportunity or dream job.

· Dress appropriately and professionally. First impressions are important! Dressing professionally gives employers the idea that you are ready to get right to work!

· Allow yourself adequate time. Come as early as possible and pace yourself appropriately throughout the event. You want to have enough time to leave a lasting impression with each employer that you are truly interested in.

· Get familiar with your surroundings at the fair. When you arrive, take a few minutes to review the career fair directory. It’s also important to note that the Career Center staff will have a table of councilors waiting to answer any questions you might have before, during or after your fair experience!

· When meeting employers, introduce yourself confidently and be prepared to give your "career pitch." Extend your hand, say "hello" with a smile, make eye contact and state your name. Welcome the representative to Hofstra. Have your resume ready to give to the employer. Be ready to talk about your career interests as well as academic and extracurricular experiences that will highlight your skills and strengths as a promising candidate.

· Take notes. When you inquire about next steps and the possibility of talking with additional managers, write down all the important information! Make sure to get names, email addresses, telephone numbers, etc. of other staff in the organization whom you can contact later. Take advantage of all the insider information you can get in order to take the next steps!

· Ask the representative for his/her card, and then promptly send a thank-you note to keep your meeting fresh in their mind. Having the business card of the representative you have just spoken to gives you a direct contact person within the organization to follow up with in the future!

· Write a thank you note: A brief thank-you note acknowledges the time they took to get to know you as a potential candidate searching for an opportunity with their company. Sending a thank-you note is always a good professional habit and gives that personal touch that could really connect you to the right opportunities.

The Hofstra University Undergraduate Intern of the Year Award recognizes an outstanding Hofstra undergraduate student who has made significant contributions during an internship. 5 reasons you should attend a career fair

1. There is something for everyone. Whether you are a first-year student looking for a part-time job, or a graduating senior or graduate student looking for a full-time gig, you will find over 150 companies looking to recruit students like you. Check out the full list here.

2. You stand out. Attending an in-person event will increase your likelihood of moving forward in an application process. Recruiters will remember your face, story, and qualifications, as opposed to browsing through random online resumes.

3. Practice makes perfect. Communicating effectively and articulating your skills and abilities plays a major role in job/internship application processes. Attending a career fair will allow you to practice your storytelling ahead of time and test it out with real people during the event, preparing you for future professional interactions.

4. The more you know. Career fairs also serve as a great way to meet new people and build your connections. Research shows that over 70% of jobs and internships are found through connections and people you know. Although a specific recruiter might not have the role you desire, they may know someone else who might.

5. You deserve it. As a Hofstra student, you deserve great job and internship opportunities. Companies will take the time to visit campus to connect with our talented students, including you. Make the best of it.
